I think that we all imagine everyone in Africa lives in a mud hut, well they dont, not everyone! However, there are still quite a few that do and there is nothing more fascinating than a trip to a genuine African village if you have the chance on your East Africa Safari. Village life is so different to that of the big towns and cities, it is quiet, it is basic and it is how you will get to experience the real Africa and meet the people who live there. We were welcomed with open arms as we entered one of the homesteads and our host introduced us to his family. Everyone shook our hands and we were shown a small wooden bench that we could sit on as the kettle was put on the open fire and a big pot of sweet black tea was prepared for us to enjoy. The Mama came and took us to her veggie patch a very neat and tidy area where she had maize, cassava, onions, coriander, tomatoes, kale and spinach growing. There were a few chickens scratching around at the fertile soil.

After our lovely tea and doughnuts we were invited into the mud hut, it was truly amazing, very sparse and tidy, just a few basic possession scattered around each room. The inside of the hut was cool, the earthy smell of the walls impregnated by the lingering smell of wood smoke, the bare earth floor worn smooth underfoot and just a small wooden window letting through a ray of light into the darkness. There were a couple of woven mats on the floor, some beds made from branches with animal skins stretched on top and a few three-legged stools tucked against the walls near to where the round clay cooking pots were stored. It was truly amazing, whilst on a Kenyan Safari to be welcomed into another persons house from a completely different culture and marvel at how simply they lived and how cluttered our own houses would seem in comparison.
